JOHN SANBORN

OUT OF CHAOS

Opening: Friday, January, 24th, 2025, 7-9 pm
Exhibition: January, 25th – March, 15th, 2025

The Anita Beckers Gallery is pleased to present the first solo show by American artist John Sanborn in a German gallery.

The exhibition comprises three bodies of work that illustrate Sanborn’s interest in new technology addressing socio- political issues: Identity, Community and Gender as well as our everyday struggle to structure the shattered surrounding into narratives that underlie our existence. John Sanborn is one of the protagonists of American video art. His work was recently shown in a major retrospective at the ZKM in Karlsruhe (Between Order and Entropy, 2022), organized by the late Peter Weibel. The Anita Beckers Gallery is based in Frankfurt am Main (GER) and is one of the few galleries in Germany, which has been focusing on video art and moving image since the 1990s.

In cooperation with the DFF-Deutsches Filminsitut Frankfurt, we will be showing a selection of John Sanborn’s film work there on Sunday, 26.01.25. at 1 pm, which the artist himself will present.

Parallel to the exhibition, a compilation of the first iteration of the work Out of Chaos will be presented as part of the House of Galleries event, which takes place for the first time from 24.1.-26.1.25 in the Trianon high-rise in Frankfurt city center and presents contemporary art from 29 galleries from Frankfurt and Germany.

Key to Chaos

by Stephen Sarrazin

The new works by American video and media artist John Sanborn that make up his show at Galerie Anita Beckers, Out of Chaos, consists of two series using AR and AI technology, Intimate Archeology and Out of Chaos | Push the Button, along with an eight-channel media installation, I AM, all made in 2024. Each piece is a collaboration, a defining trait of a career that spans over four decades balancing the possibilities of new mediums for image creation and control, and a reality at odds with being contained.

A career that in many ways would be shaped by two early seminal single channel videos from the early eighties, made with Kit Fitzgerald, Order and Entropy, taking the artist on a singular and unparalleled media journey tracing the evolution of 20th century use of media and its next century iterations.

ABOUT THE WORKS

OUT OF CHAOS – PUSH THE BUTTON

2025

This is the third iteration of Sanborn’s AI/AR platform, where the viewer must assemble three layers of intrusive elements that encourage them to lose themselves in a dense augmented reality experience.

In this version, Lali Wilde and John Sanborn focus on the nature of impulsive actions and their consequences, from joyful, celebratory and sensual to horrific and harmful.

The gallery is populated with 80 artificially generated still images, all curious and strange. Scanning an image will trigger a free video clip on your mobile device, in any order. It’s then up to you to link the instances together and extract your own personal ‚meaning‘.

To view any of the 80 instances in Out of Chaos | Push the Button, scan the QR code to download the EyeJack app, then scan it again to load the collection, scan the triggering image of the melting orchestra, and enjoy.

I AM

2025

with Louise Soulié-Dubol and Xavier Lavernhe

Louise Soulié-Dubol, Xavier Lavernhe and John Sanborn asked 55 artists to tell them who they are in one minute, without words. Their answers are impressive, intimate and exuberant.
I AM is a vivid demonstration of a creative community of “others” that emerges through self-portraits of strong individuals.
